The St John Ambulance Sub Centre at York is an important local community facility. The existing depot was unfortunately destroyed by fire in 2016 with a cleared site presented for the construction of a new sub centre.
The ambulance service was fully operational from an adjoining shed during the construction period. The site was managed to ensure construction works did not impinge on the provision of emergency services with unrestricted and free movement of ambulances at all times.
The project consisted of the construction of a new building, ambulance garage and accessways, with spaces fit out for office administration, first aid training rooms and staff and volunteer amenities including individual sleep and rest rooms.
A single storey commercial building with steel frame construction, sheet metal external walls and metal roof cladding provides a robust fit for purpose functional facility. The use of feature render walls and St John Ambulance colour schemed materials provides a customised aspect to a highly functional facility. The ambulance garage combines practicality and flexibility with the garage suitably finished to a standard that enables the facility to be repurposed for other uses in emergency situations.
